Komorebi

Sunlight through the leaves

Komorebi is a small Tokyo studio that finds, tests and ships the everyday objects Japan makes better than anywhere else.

Why we started

We began in 2024 with a suitcase of Hasami mugs for friends abroad who kept asking us to bring things back from Japan. The mugs were followed by matcha, then towels, then a knife or two, and at some point it became clear that what people wanted was not souvenirs but the ordinary, excellent things that Japanese households take for granted.

Komorebi is our answer: a small, carefully edited shop of goods from workshops we have visited in person, shipped from Tokyo with the same care we would take for family.

How we choose

Made by people, not lines

Everything we sell comes from a workshop small enough that we know who made it. Most have been at it for several generations.

Used before it is listed

We live with each product for at least a month. If it does not earn a place in our own kitchen or bathroom, it does not go in the shop.

Honest about what it is

We tell you where things are made, what they are made of and how to look after them. Nothing is “artisan” unless a person actually made it.

The makers

Our porcelain comes from Hasami in Nagasaki and Mino in Gifu. Our knives are forged in Sakai, our teapots cast in Iwate, our brushes bound in Kumano and our towels woven in Imabari. The tea is grown by two families, one above Uji and one in Kagoshima, and the paper is formed by hand in Mino. We visit each of them at least once a year, usually with a list of questions and a very full suitcase on the way home.

From our studio to you

Orders are packed by hand in our studio in Shibuya, Tokyo, wrapped in washi and sent with a handwritten note within two business days. We ship worldwide with full tracking, and if anything arrives less than perfect we will replace it or refund you, no forms required.

The studio is not open to the public, but we answer every email ourselves at [email protected].
